Glenbrook is delighted to offer one young sire bred for production
GLENBROOK CAMBOGE EMPEROR
is a son of GLENBROOK CAMBOGE who has been used in several countries around the world.
Emperor's dam had a daily average as a heifer of 24.5 litres and 2.18 kgs a day.
Glenbrook Chief Emerald EX2 with her new born heifer calf [ by Camboge ] March 2012.
Emeralds 2 year old record was 2-0 7466 litres 4.9% 369 fat 4.0% ptn 296 ptn 665 ms in 305 days
Her 3 year record was 3-0 7275 litres 5.0% 362 fat 4.2% 303 ptn 665 ms in 305 days
Emerald's dam is the mighty Ashdown Judds Elm SJ3 EX*
11-3 6981 litres 6.7% 466 kg fat 4.2% 293 kg ptn 759 kg ms in 305 days
Champion cow North Taranaki Club Show 2006 Reserve Champion cow North Taranaki club show 2007
Top cow for type, Semex National Jersey Challenge for Lower North Island Region 2006. 4th top cow for type for New Zealand 2006 Semex Challenge.
Elm was sired by Judds Admiral and out of Ashdown Penny Elm SJ2 EX8, 579 kgs ms @ 6yrs.
Elm was a truly magnificent cow that I fell in love with the first minute I saw her. The Hawera Jersey club had a farm visit to the Whitimore stud in 2005 and she was the first cow I saw when we walked in the paddock. Apparently I've been told I looked at her for quite some time and said that I would own her one day. Well as these things go a couple of years later in 2007 the Whitimore stud was dispersed and guess who the cover girl on the catalogue was ? It was the above photo of Elm on the cover. I didn't have a lot of money but she was rising 12 and in full milk and open as they had intended to flush her so that was all in my favour. I ended up paying $2400 for her and had expected that she would go for a lot more than that. If she had been incalf I reckon she could easily have been four times that price. Anyway I brought her home and she finished that lactation with 6981 litres milk 6.7% 466 kgs fat 4.2% 293 kgs ptn and 759 kgs ms in 305 days. Mated her to Glenbrook Command Chief to linebreed her to Admiral and that mating produced Glenbrook Chief Emerald EX2 who broke my two years record production this season.
When I had to sell the herd in 2009, Elm then went to the Metuas stud where she has a daughter by Ivanhoe Red Triumph who placed 2nd in the incalf heifer class Hawera Jersey Club Shoe 2013 . Sadly Elm had to be put down last spring at 16 years. Elm was a truly great cow. Elm's lifetime production on 12 lactations was 59,405 litres milk 6.2% 3694 kgs fat 4.4% 2618 kgs ptn 6,312 kgs ms in 3081 days or over 2.00 kgs ms a day for her lifetime. Elm was milked on several different farms with 4 different owners in her lifetime. She was born in the Manawatu, milked in Southland in her prime and finished up in Taranaki. She was milked in Rotary, Herringbone and Walk-thru cowsheds and admired where ever she went.
Emperor is a very typey young bull that should leave a lot of production from great looking cows. All the cows in his 3 generation pedigree have been outstanding type cows with awesome production.
---------------------------------------------------------
A short history of the Glenbrook stud.
Glenbrook was founded in 1979 but the cow that has made the stud was purchased in 1980. Lamorna Rovers Brenda VHC, had 8 milking daughters at Glenbrook and founded the mighty "C' family here. Brenda was a great grand daughter of Big Hollow Choice Blondie VHC, New Zealand record priced cow at the Big Hollow dispersal sale. Blondie along with her dam Big Hollow Bourvardia were the two highest ever producing cows in the famous Big Hollow stud. At Glenbrook we believe there is a production gene that has been carried down from these cows and with the linebreeding programme carried out at Glenbrook has been intensified and refined now. Glenbrook was founded with the aim of reaching a 1000 lb [ 454 kg ] fat herd average. This has now upgraded to a 750 kgs ms herd average which is still the goal here. Glenbrook used bulls from all round the Jersey world in the early days to see how they worked in NZ conditions. The herd then used the highest genetics available and reached the number two herd in New Zealand at one stage. Glenbrook had some 19 bulls selected for AI sire proving programmes during these years with the outstanding Glenbrook Ocean Commando being the best preformed of these.
After many years of studying old Jersey catalogues, farming books and especially pedigrees of top producing cows it was felt that a system of line breeding would give the best results. This has now been followed for a number of years and is proving to be very successful. In recent years a number of Glenbrook sire have been collected privately and used like these two bulls offered to you now. The unusual aspect of Glenbrook breeding is that the herd is line bred to a cow family. The results speak for themselves with Glenbrook achieving the highest producing herd in New Zealand for any size on at least 8 seasons now since 1987-88 when Glenbrook first topped the nation for production. Numerous individual cows have topped New Zealand, Taranaki and their age groups on many occasions. Most recently in 2010-11 season Glenbrook milked two of the only three heifers to milk over 8000 litres in Jersey history in NZ. The list of herd averages over 520 kgs ms includes Glenbrook achieving more than any other herd at this level.
Glenbrook exceeded the New Zealand record for any size Jersey herd in the 2011-12 season with a RECORD herd average of 670 kgs ms per cow. This was also the 4th highest herd in New Zealand of any breed. And more pleasing was the fact that GLENBROOK was the highest producing herd in the whole Southern Hemisphere last season.
The Glenbrook entire milking herd was dispersed in October 2009 due to ill health and restarted up again in April 2010 with the remaining young stock and a few dry cows still retained. Glenbrook is a small herd on a small farm and milked by one man all year round. Split calving is carried out for 6 weeks twice a year in March and July. The cows are fed pellets in the bail at milking and grass. For most of the year they receive a procow [ mixture of DDG, PKE and Molasses ] mix in the paddock and some hay. The idea is to make feeding the cows as simple as possible. The Glenbrook herd is milked in a walkthrough cowshed , one of the last remaining of this type in Taranaki, indeed in New Zealand.
Glenbrook's breeding philosophy has always been to breed for production first, then temperament, longevity and type. Every heifer calf born on the property is expected to produce well into her teens. Lifetime production is the most profitable measure of any cow. Glenbrook is delighted to have three cows in the top twenty highest ever lifetime producers in New Zealand. Glenbrook bulls are noted for their daughters great temperament and management traits in addition to outstanding production.
